01 — What SEO is

SEO, explained without the jargon.

Search engine optimisation is the work of making your website easier for search engines like Google to find, understand and trust, so that it appears when the right people search for what you offer.

Before Google can show any page in its results, three things have to happen. Each one is a part of SEO.

  1. Find: Can Google reach your pages?

Search engines discover pages by following links and reading sitemaps. Broken links, blocked pages, slow servers or confusing structure mean some pages are never properly found.

  2. Understand: Is it clear what each page is about?

Google reads the words, headings, titles and structure of every page to work out which searches it answers. Vague or duplicated pages are hard to match to the right searches.

  3. Trust: Is this the most useful, credible answer?

Among the pages that answer a search, Google favours the ones that are most helpful and most trusted, judged partly by the quality of the content and partly by how others reference the business.

02 — Why it’s worth it

Why businesses invest in SEO.

  • The people searching already want what you offer

Someone typing “accountant for small businesses” or “commercial roofing contractor” is actively looking. SEO helps you appear at that moment, rather than interrupting people who are not.

  • Visibility you earn tends to last

Paid adverts stop the moment spending stops. Improvements to your website’s structure, content and reputation keep working after the work is done, although they do need looking after.

  • It makes the website better for visitors too

Faster pages, clearer content and easier navigation help search engines, and they help the people deciding whether to contact you.

03 — SEO & your website

Search starts with how a website is built.

Much of what decides whether a page can rank is set when the website is built: its structure, its speed, its page addresses and how clearly each page is written.

Planning a new website?

Because we also design and build websites, SEO can be planned in from the first sketch, which is the most effective and least expensive time to get it right.

Already have a website?

We can work on websites we did not build: improving them directly, giving your developer a prioritised list of changes, or both.

Existing websites

You do not need a new website to improve your SEO.

Many websites can be improved considerably as they are. An audit shows whether your current site can support your goals, or whether its foundations are holding it back, and we will tell you plainly which applies.

To get started

What helps us help you

  • Your website address
  • Google Search Console access, if set up
  • Analytics access, if you use it
  • How your website is edited, or who built it
  • The services and areas that matter most
  • Any past SEO work you know of

Do not have some of these? That is normal; we can set up what is missing.

04 — How we work

Audit first. Then evidence, not guesswork.

Every SEO engagement begins by understanding where your website stands today. Keyword research then tells us what your customers really search for, and which of those searches are worth pursuing.

Search volumes from keyword tools are estimates, so we weigh them alongside search intent, relevance to your services and real data from your own website.

  1. Step 1: Audit

We review your website’s technical health, content, internal links and current search performance, using Google Search Console where available.

  2. Step 2: Keyword research & strategy

We research what your customers actually search for, judge which searches signal genuine buying intent, and decide which page should answer each one.

  3. Step 3: Improve the foundations

Technical issues are fixed in priority order, so search engines can reach, read and index the pages that matter.

  4. Step 4: Optimise and strengthen content

Page titles, headings, copy and internal links are improved, and we plan new content only where it serves a real search need.

  5. Step 5: Measure, report, refine

We track what changes in search, explain it in plain English, and adjust priorities based on evidence rather than assumptions.

06 — Why SEO takes time

Months, not weeks.

Anyone promising instant results is either buying adverts or taking risks with your website. Genuine SEO builds gradually, for reasons outside any agency’s control.

  1. Search engines need to revisit

Changes only count once Google has re-crawled and re-assessed your pages, which happens on its own schedule.

  2. Trust is earned gradually

Newer websites, and pages that have only just improved, generally take time to be seen as reliable answers.

  3. Your competitors are moving too

Rankings are relative. The more established the competition for a search, the longer it usually takes to make headway.

  4. Your starting point matters

A website with serious technical problems has more to put right before content improvements can have their full effect.

08 — Questions

SEO questions, answered.

Not sure where to start? Ask for an SEO review and we will tell you what we would look at first.

What is SEO, in plain English?

Search engine optimisation is the work of making your website easier for search engines like Google to find, understand and trust, so that it appears when the right people search for what you offer. It covers the technical health of the site, the content on each page, and the signals that show your business is credible.

How long does SEO take to work?

SEO is a gradual process. Technical fixes can be picked up as soon as Google next crawls the site, but meaningful changes in visibility usually take months rather than weeks, and competitive searches can take considerably longer. It depends on your starting point, your competitors and how much can be improved.

Can you guarantee first-page rankings on Google?

No, and you should be cautious of anyone who does. Google decides its own rankings, and they depend on factors no agency controls, including competitors and changes to Google itself. What we can do is remove technical barriers, improve the relevance and quality of your pages, and report honestly on what is changing.

Can you work on a website you did not build?

Yes. Depending on how your website is built and the access available, we either make improvements directly, provide a prioritised list of changes for your developer, or combine the two.

Do I need a new website to improve my SEO?

Not necessarily. Many improvements can be made to an existing website. An audit shows whether the current site can support your goals or whether its foundations are holding it back, and we will tell you plainly which applies.

What does an SEO audit include?

A review of your website’s technical health, how each important page is optimised, the quality and coverage of your content, internal linking, and how your site currently appears in search, using Google Search Console where available. You receive prioritised findings in plain English, with what to fix first and why.

How will I know whether the SEO is working?

We report in plain English using data from Google Search Console and, where available, your analytics: which searches you appear for, how often people click through, the work completed and what comes next. Reports are provided at the interval agreed in your plan.

How much does SEO cost?

SEO is tailored to each website and business, so we provide a bespoke quotation once we understand your goals, your current website and your market.

Can you set up Google Search Console for my business?

Yes. We can set up and verify Google Search Console, submit your sitemap and explain what the data means. It is free from Google, and it is one of the most useful sources of information about how your website performs in search.
